Paul Hyland is Executive Producer of edweek.org at Editorial Projects in Education, publisher of Education Week and Teacher Magazine. In that capacity he oversees the technology infrastructure and content production for the Web sites of several publications, the EPE Research Center, and the TopSchoolJobs.org job board.
Edweek.org recently implemented several features involving social media, including accepting comments on all articles, teacher web forums and profiles; they are also expanding their presence on public social networks such as Facebook and YouTube, and the use of social bookmarking and sharing technologies. Other major initiatives include finishing up a year-long rolling site redesign; enhancing interfaces with external publishing, registration, and email systems; and implementing various other infrastructure improvements.
Paul has spent over twenty years working in computing and Internet technology, most recently as a web developer, user interface specialist, and web technology manager, for organizations ranging from Network Solutions, NASD, and the DC Government to Media Matters for America. He also spent several years as a producer at AOL and a programmer/analyst at IBM.
Throughout his career, Paul has also been an observer, critic, and activist concerned with the impact of computing technology and the Internet on society, serving on the boards of Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility and the National Capital Public Access Network; he is currently a member of the US Public Policy Committee of the Association of Computing Machinery.
He has an M.A. in Science, Technology and Public Policy from The George Washington University, and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Yale University. He plays congas in a DC-area rock band, and lives with his family in Silver Spring, MD.
