The We Media Community

A network of innovators who lead, invest, inform and inspire the power of us.

Welcome to the We Media Community and thanks for joining. We're a global business network for executives, investors, producers, creators, designers, developers, educators, storytellers, journalists, marketers and entrepreneurs. Together we lead, inspire and invest in a world made better through media.

I hope you'll find it useful, practical and informative. For starters, you can join or start a group, write a blog, share photos and videos, post jobs, float ideas or seek help.

The community works on two levels. First, there's self-interest: We're all here to learn from each other, to strengthen our businesses, shape our careers, identify new partners and guide our strategies.

That's all practical and immensely valuable in its own right. But there's also a grander vision that may be obvious to some, and crazy talk to others. That's the social impact and potential of our community: to inform and inspire a planet made better through media.

The We Media Community is a global network of companies and individuals from the intersecting fields of media, technology, telecomunications, investment, policy, education and social activism. Our members include business leaders, journalists, entrepreneurs, bloggers, artists, marketers, activists, scientists, entertainers, educators, creators, thinkers and pioneers.

We produce, manage, create and lead information, communications and technology enterprises to achieve a variety of business, creative and social goals for many different industries and audiences. Our common interest is our shared destiny powered and defined by We Media - and our ability to connect and learn from each other here.

What's We Media? It's an idea and a movement, and it defines the world we live in now, today - connected and informed through digital networks and media produced by everyone, everywhere. We Media is a counterpoint to “The” media. In a world connected by digital information networks and devices, the power to produce and distribute media and communications services is in more people’s hands than ever before. That includes grass roots groups, bloggers and independent media creators, as well as big media and technology companies and institutions large and small that share space, time and attention with everyone else in the connected society.

We Media defines how we know what we know, whether through journalism and the shifting systems used to produce it, through social networks and our personal connections to people and organizations we trust, or through old and new forms of story-telling, marketing, advertising and advocacy that travel side-by-side and surround us in the digital mediascape.

Like a physical community, the We Media Community is diverse. It may be a stretch to call this a social network because the truth is we don't all look at the world the same way or travel in the same circles, virtual or physical.

But that's also our secret sauce. We're here to find new voices, new partners and new ideas. In that sense, the We Media Community is an antidote to the built-in limitations of traditional trade and professional associations. While they can be immensely helpful for their members, they also isolate professions, defend narrow interests and limit learning across sectors.

The community is organized and facilitated by iFOCOS, the non-profit media think tank and futures lab I founded with Dale Peskin two years ago to help individuals and organizations worldwide understand and use expanding media and communications technologies. We also organize the annual We Media conference and conduct research and consulting on media trends and strategies.

Full participation and access to the online community is FREE and open to anyone. We also offer paid memberships for companies and individuals. Paid members receive registration discounts, first-mover notice of research and projects and advance notice of early-bird registration windows for We Media conferences. Our Global Partners are the major sponsors of our annual We Media conference. Membership fees support research, working groups, regional meetings, publications, the We Media Game Changers Awards and an annual conference. To learn more about the fees an benefits, click here. I hope you'll dive in, learn and get something out of your membership. I look forward to seeing and hearing you online and in person.
